PAT Testing – what's it all about?

Did you know that the term 'PAT testing' actually stands for portable appliance testing? In the UK, health and safety regulations state that all electrical appliances must be safe and maintained to prevent harm to workers. Ultimately PAT testing is the best way for businesses and educational establishments to ensure that this is the case.

Portable appliance testing can be traced back to British government buildings in the 1960s, but the introduction of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 was when specific guidelines were created. These regulations have contributed to safer working environments throughout the UK.

The actual PAT testing required on a piece of equipment is dependent on the type of appliance, its electrical class and the level of risk. A number of tests can be conducted including:

  • Earth resistance test
  • Earth continuity test
  • Insulation resistance test
  • Microwave test
  • Plus many others

At Inspection Services we pride ourselves in providing a complete portable appliance testing package. Our engineers will not only test all equipment within the premises, but will also carry out minor works, adjustments and remedial works – all within the price of the work. This means our customers are safe in the knowledge that their electrical appliances are safe and fit for purpose for another year.
